Pointers to Find an Effective Drum Instructor

How can you make sure that you are hiring a certified instructor among many drum instructors out there? How would know that you are getting a qualified and not unskilled instructor who knows how to thump a beat? Here are the tips to help you choose the best drum teacher in town.

Discover out if your drum teacher is a professed one. Ask for certifications and diplomas or certificates. An ideal drum teacher would be one who has a diploma in Music Education with a stress on Percussions and ABRSM certifications.

Certified or not, these are only pieces of paper that can be presented to you but experience matters so make sure you find a teacher who is experienced in instructing a certain pupils so you should be able to find one that suits the student’s age or musical genre.

Keep in mind that playing and teaching are two very various things. One may have experience to teach drums but this does not mean that he is capable of teaching drums. Observe some of their drumming techniques or stick techniques. Observe their teaching techniques and supervision. A limited understanding of time signatures greatly affects your progress. Aside from basic beats, a very good drum instructor does not only focus on one musical genre but can instruct a multitude of other music styles such as jazz, funk, reggae, odd time (unusual time signatures), Latin, fusion, marching and others.
